Remembrance and Honor Commemorative Event

Join several VIPs, local dignitaries, and your Charlottesville/Albemarle friends and neighbors at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion as we remember those who lost their lives on 9/11 and also honor our communities first responders: firefighters, police, rescue and military personnel. Musical performances, a special guest speaker, and a Parade of Honor down the mall will make this an evening to remember!

Police, Fire and EMS vehicles from the City, County and University of Virginia will be on display along the Downtown Mall.

Guest Speaker: Admiral James Barnett (Ret), Chief of the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau

Presentation of Tower Steel: The 9/11 Memorial Steel from the WTC North Tower will be on display adjacent to the Pavilion.  Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner will present the Tower Steel, which will reside in the soon-to-be-built Fontaine Avenue Fire Station.

UVa Glee Club will perform the National Anthem

UVa Black Voices will perform selections of gospel music

The Virginia Consort and Orchestra will perform the Fauré Requiem, a beautiful and moving tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11.

The Charlottesville Municipal Band Brass Ensemble will play selections of patriotic music.

7:15 pm • Special Viewing of Project Rebirth Film at Paramount Theater-Free and Open to Public

Project Rebirth’s film, REBIRTH, is a full-length documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2011. It is the result of a decade-long process by director Jim Whitaker and is a riveting journey into living history. It is also an act of personal witness to one of the most profound events in American history and the healing that has come its wake.

Other Community Events on 9/11

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the United States, First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville will host an ecumenical Service of Remembrance on Sunday afternoon, September 11, 3:30 p.m., featuring a performance of the Mozart Requiem.

Members of the Oratorio Society of Virginia will be joined for the performance by other community singers, and members of the UVA University Singers, led by UVA faculty conductor Michael Slon.  The event is free and open to the public.

First Presbyterian Church is located at 500 Park Street, Charlottesville. We hope that you will join us for what promises to be a beautiful, moving occasion.
